I'm sure we have had a talk with a family member.
Yes, that talk in explaining the different areas of the speech-language pathology (SLP) profession to a family member. My mother asked me about my favorite course in undergrad, and it’s augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
I was fortunate to have had received education in communication modalities in my undergrad. I went from not knowing what AAC was to being fascinated by how assistive technology supports language to grow.
In my mind, I say, “oh snap, how do I explain the field of AAC to my mother? And on top of that, how do I make it understandable in Japanese?”
First, I listed the ASHA’s 9 areas of competency

Next, I demonstrated how to use AAC with a low-tech device with the help of my bilingual, little brother.
Then, I demonstrated how to use a high-tech AAC device by downloading a free app on my iPhone.
Finally, I explained to her the different types of AAC devices and how users access their devices in various ways (i.e., eye gaze, scanning, etc.).
I asked her how you would explain AAC to your friends? She said or translated in English. “It’s a tablet that teaches kids to speak and understand the language. I find it quite convenient that AAC is available in multiple languages. ” I accomplished my goal! I increased my awareness of AAC and assistive technology at home.
As a future speech-language pathologists, I look forward to giving students access to technology and AAC in allowing them to be competitive in the global economy.
Stay well,
